U.S. forces carried out a mission in Syria that led to the death of Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, a figure President Biden called "the driving force behind the genocide of the Yazidi people."

When Islamic State militants swept across Iraq and Syria in 2014, their reign over a swath of territory the size of Britain terrorized millions of people. U.N. investigators have described the killings and torture of many Yazidis as genocidal crimes.
